Week 18, Day 2 (Got a scan date, yayyyyy!)

Think of me this Thursday coming, at 11am. Not sure whether it's the 3d scan, or another ultrasound, as they're booked solid and no promises either way. Good of them to fit me in quickly, so I'm not going to be too pushy about it.

Poor old Wayne's going through a particularly bad patch of insomnia. He gets off to sleep easily enough, but wakes during the night and stumbles out to the couch so that he doesn't disturb me with his tossing & turning. After a few days of this, he starts looking like an extra in Dawn of the Dead, and I worry about him driving the truck and using equipment with sharp spinning blades. To help him along, we've swapped sides - now HE's sleeping and I'm the one who wakes at 3am. As I can't sleep much before midnight, that means I'm even more zombied at dawn, but usually that's okay because baby has a way of making me take a nap to catch up. Yesterday I did almost nothing but sleep, and still managed to put in nearly a complete's night sleep last night. Didn't stop me drifting off to sleep at the keyboard today... hooboy, I thought the sleeping sickness had gone away? Guess not.

We're starting to shop seriously for Tadpole now. We originally planned to hire most of the 'hardware' (car seat, bassinette, cot, etc) but the prices you pay to hire are almost as much as buying new, if you buy sensibly. After an afternoon's investigation, (that thing we do nearly always, obvious exception being a certain camera, LOL), it became clear that the smartest/most fiscally feasible option would be to buy a car seat that adapts for newborns through to pre-schoolers, forego the pram completely, and get a really good stroller/buggy for the six months onward stage. We've got a frontpack and a bouncinette, so the baby can be as mobile as we want in the early stages without tying ourselves down to a lot of stuff that she'll outgrow in a few months.

Re bassinettes.. I had a good giggle at the beautiful store models. Lots of lace, frills and frou-frou (ie one good spew down the side and they're stuffed). Lovely in theory, useless in real life, let's try something else.

We found a clever swinging bassinette that is too simple for words. $120 to buy the cradle plus another $140 for the frame, or we can make it ourselves with some dowl, canvas, a piece of MDF and some straps for maybe $30. Wayne's a very clever DIY'er, and I can sew - between the two of us we had the object planned out & priced in five minutes. And OUR one can be taken with us anywhere, ie have baby snoring in the bedroom, office or lounge, as easy as installing a ringbolt in the ceiling spot of your choice.

Another beaut thing about this cradle is it's cat-proof, and the canvas can be thrown in the washing machine in a jiffy. Yep, that'll do :-)

We also bought some fantastic scales that seem to be dead accurate, time after time. I discovered that I have actually lost a bit of weight in the last week, meaning I'm only 2.5kgs heavier than I was pre-pregnancy. I know what made me lose weight... sleeping. Told you it was the diet of the future ;-)

(If you use it and lose it, you owe me 10 bucks each) Cheap as chips ;-)
