Week 37, Day 5 (Random musings)

I'm opening book on what baby will weigh in at today. Wayne says 4 kilos, I reckon it's probably closer to 3.85 kg. What's your guess?

It's going to be a slow cold trip in - slow because there's still lots of sleety snowy shit on the roads, and it's a 45 minute drive on an ordinary day. Cold, because I'll be sitting on two towels perched on a car seat utterly covered with a black plastic rubbish bag. Being alarmists of the first order, we heeded the warnings that if your waters break in the car, you can pretty much throw away the seat. Hence the well wrapped (if slimy & uncomfortable) passenger seat.

Reading up on breaking waters, I notice that only 17-20% of women's waters break prior to the transition between 1st and 2nd stage of labour, ie that mental picture we all carry of causing a flood in the supermarket aisle is fairly unlikely. What is more usual is that we 'slow leak', and this can also be mistaken by the woman as just damp knickers. It is suggested that when in doubt, wear a maternity pad.

Apparently there's a swab your midwife can use to tell what exactly you're leaking (ie if you really should have done more pelvic lifts, or if bubs is imminent).

So here's my brilliant idea. Why doesn't Tena or Stayfree etc make a maternity pad with a strip down the middle that reacts to amniotic fluid, just to remove all doubt? That way all bases are covered, and the women are more empowered and reassured.

As I type this I hear the TV news reporting that NASA are planning to "return men to the moon by year 2018". This raises some questions.

Firstly, by "returning" does that mean that's where they came from? John Grey's got it all wrong then (he said "Mars", lol)

Secondly, IF it was done all before in the 60's and 70's AND the conspiracy theorists are wrong and they really DID get there before, why the hold up? Is our technology worse than before? Are the astronauts less brave & adventurous?

Or maybe ... just maybe.. the conspiracy theorists are right and those moon shots were faked ;-)

Will we ever know? Unlikely.
Will space travel REALLY happen in my son's lifetime? I hope so!
